Q: When should one start planning a move into a seniors residence?
A: This is easier said than done, but ideally the move should be planned 6 to 9 months in advance. This allows a fuller range of options to be considered and viewed. In addition, planning ahead allows the senior to be placed on the waitlist for the most preferred homes and not be under any immediate urgency to settle for what is currently available.
Q: How long are the waitlists?
A: Waitlists vary depending on the location and type of residence. Some residences may have rooms available immediately and some may have waitlists extending over a year. As a sidenote, some residences require a refundable deposit to be given to be placed on the waitlist.
Q: What financial assistance is provided by the government?
A: There are various subsidy programs available depending on the type of seniors residence desired: independent living, supportive living, assisted living, and complex care. The programs are run through either BC Housing or the provincial health authority. Each subsidy program has its own set of criteria.
